Register: tu vs vous and formal vs familiar word choices
When the exam demands formal French and when familiar French is fine — and the words that give your register away.
Register is a scoring dimension in its own right: using the right level of formality shows sociolinguistic competence, a CLB marker. The same idea can be phrased casually or formally, and the exam task tells you which to pick. Choosing wrong — a slangy word in a formal letter, or a stiff phrase in a friendly role-play — costs points even when the grammar is perfect.
Which register does each task want?

Read the prompt for the relationship it sets up. « Vous écrivez au maire de votre ville » demands vous and formal vocabulary; « Vous parlez à un ami qui hésite » invites tu and everyday words. Match the person you are addressing, not your comfort zone.
