Once the basic kit is automatic, a few refined connectors add the nuance that pushes an answer toward the higher CLB bands. But each carries a constraint — a register, a required mood, or a shade of meaning — and misusing them stands out more than sticking to simple words. en revanche vs par contre
Both express opposition, but « en revanche » is neutral-to-formal and always safe in writing, while « par contre » is more colloquial and historically frowned upon by purists. In a formal letter, prefer « en revanche »; in a friendly role-play, « par contre » is perfectly natural.
