Exam-day time management, module by module
Reading order tactics, when to skip, and how to budget your minutes qualitatively across each module.
More candidates lose points to the clock than to the language. Every module rewards a plan for spending your minutes, so that no single hard question drags down easier ones you would have answered correctly. This lesson keeps timings qualitative on purpose — always confirm the official durations from your test centre — but the tactics apply whatever the exact numbers.
Reading comprehension: order and skipping
Read the question before the text so you know what to hunt for, then scan rather than read every word. Answer the questions you are sure of first and mark the rest. A single hard item is never worth several easy ones — if you have spent too long, choose your best guess, flag it, and move on. Return only if time remains.
Listening: one pass, no rewind
Audio plays once, so your budget is fixed by the recording, not by you. Preview the answer options during any pause, take abbreviated notes rather than full sentences, and if you miss an item, let it go instantly — dwelling on it makes you miss the next one too. Protect the questions still coming.
Written expression: plan, write, proofread
A qualitative split of your writing time
| Phase | Share of time | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Plan / planifier | a small opening slice / une petite tranche d'ouverture | thesis + two arguments in the margin / thèse + deux arguments en marge |
| Write / rédiger | the large central block / le grand bloc central | steady output, no rewriting / production régulière, sans réécrire |
| Proofread / relire | a protected final slice / une tranche finale protégée | agreements, endings, negation / accords, terminaisons, négation |
Il me reste peu de temps ; je choisis la réponse la plus probable et je passe à la suite.Rehearse pacing under real conditions: run a full timed mock of one module, then review not only your answers but where your minutes actually went.
