TEF Speaking Section A: the art of asking to obtain information
Fire off eight to ten varied, natural questions and frame the call politely — the exact skill Section A scores.
In Section A of the TEF Canada oral, you play someone who must obtain information — you read a short advertisement or notice and then question an interlocutor to learn everything a real caller would need. You are not judged on charm; you are judged on your ability to ask many clear, varied questions without freezing. The single biggest mistake candidates make is asking three questions and running dry.
Three ways to build a question
French offers three registers of question. Rotate between them so your speech does not sound like a checklist. « Est-ce que » is the safe, all-purpose form; intonation questions are casual and fast; inversion is the most formal and impresses the examiner when you use it correctly.

Interrogative words that guarantee variety
- Combien — price, quantity, duration: « Combien de temps dure la formation ? »
- Quand / à quelle heure — dates and timing: « Quand est-ce que ça commence ? »
- Où — location: « Où se déroule l'événement exactement ? »
- Comment — method or condition: « Comment est-ce qu'on s'inscrit ? »
- Est-ce qu'il faut / peut-on — requirements: « Est-ce qu'il faut réserver à l'avance ? »
