French-sounding fillers and self-repair phrases that buy thinking time without dead silence or English "um".
Perfect speech is not the goal of the oral exam — controlled, continuous speech is. Native speakers hesitate constantly, but they hesitate IN FRENCH. Replacing your English « um » and long panicked silences with French fillers instantly makes you sound more fluent, even when your grammar is unchanged. Examiners hear rhythm before they hear mistakes.

When you catch a mistake, do not stop and apologize — repair it smoothly and keep going. A clean self-correction actually reads as a strength: it shows you monitor your own French. The trick is a short bridge phrase between the error and the fix.
Self-repair bridges
- « … enfin, je veux dire… » — restart the idea more precisely
- « … ou plutôt… » — swap a wrong word for the right one
- « … pardon, je reprends… » — restart a tangled sentence
- « … comment dire, plutôt comme ça… » — reformulate calmly

The safest way to think during a question is to restate it. Echoing part of the prompt is normal, natural French and gives your brain three or four seconds to organize an answer — with no dead air.
