Preposition errors: à vs de, en/dans/à, and depuis/pendant/pour
The verb+preposition pairs and place/time prepositions worth memorizing to stop small, costly slips.
Prepositions are tiny words with no reliable logic, so learners fill them in from English habits — and English uses different ones. The errors are small individually but frequent, and they read as a lack of idiomatic control. There is no rule to derive them from: the fix is to memorize the pairing together with the verb, exactly as you would learn a noun with its gender.

The place and time rules that actually help
- Countries: en + feminine/vowel (en France, en Ontario), au + masculine (au Canada, au Québec), aux + plural (aux États-Unis)
- Cities: à (à Montréal, à Toronto)
- en + duration to complete something (en deux heures = within two hours); dans + time before an event starts (dans deux heures = in two hours from now)
Je vis au Canada depuis deux ans et je passerai l'examen dans un mois.depuis / pendant / pour
« Depuis » marks an action that started in the past and still continues (present tense: « je travaille ici depuis 2020 »). « Pendant » covers a completed, bounded duration (« j'ai étudié pendant trois heures »). « Pour » expresses an intended future duration (« je pars pour deux semaines »). English "for" covers all three, which is exactly why they get mixed up.
