Active listening: predict, dodge the traps, note with symbols
Read the question stem before the audio, expect paraphrase not repetition, and capture answers in one pass.
In both TEF Canada and TCF Canada listening sections, the audio usually plays once or twice and you cannot control the pace. Candidates who merely "listen and hope" lose points not because they lack vocabulary, but because they were still processing the question when the answer went past. Active listening flips the order: you decide what to listen for before the recording begins.
Step 1 — Predict from the question stem
During the seconds before the audio, read the question and its options and ask: what kind of answer is this? A number? A place? A reason? An opinion? Naming the target narrows your attention so you catch the exact moment the answer appears instead of trying to hold the whole recording in memory.

The single most common trap: the audio rarely reuses the words printed in the question. The right answer is usually a synonym or a rephrasing, while a wrong option deliberately echoes a word you just heard. Hearing your keyword out loud should raise suspicion, not confidence.

Full words cost too much time. Build a tiny personal shorthand so your hand keeps up with the audio and your ears stay free. Consistency matters more than the exact symbols you pick.
